Cyclone Ditwah inched closer to the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh as a red alert was sounded and torrential rain battered the region due to the storm's impact. The cyclone is moving north-northwest and approaching the southwest Bay of Bengal near the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early Sunday.
According to the IMD, the storm will pass close to the coastline, coming within 60 km by midnight tonight, 50 km by early Sunday morning and as close as 25 km by Sunday evening.
Ditwah
has already unleashed catastrophic flooding in Sri Lanka, killing over 153 people and leaving over 171 missing. Thousands have been displaced, landslides have torn through entire regions, and rescue teams are battling the clock and weather to pull survivors from rooftops, trees and submerged structures.
With heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu’s southern and delta districts, state authorities have moved into high alert, deploying disaster response teams, preparing shelters, and reviewing emergency measures to manage the second major weather system this month.
