A three-year-old girl was rescued within minutes after climbing onto the roof of a 20-foot-high plastic sorting shed in Palakkad district on Saturday.
The dramatic rescue, performed by a construction worker, was caught on video and quickly went viral on social media. The incident occurred at a private company's shed used to store and sort plastic waste collected by sanitation workers. The girl's parents, migrant workers, live on the premises.
Shihabudheen, a 38-year-old construction worker, said he and a friend were about to leave on their bikes after finishing concrete work when he noticed movement on the rooftop. "At first, I
thought it was an animal—a cat, dog, or bird.
But when we looked closer, we realized it was a child," he told reporters. Without wasting a moment, Shihabudheen climbed up. By then, the child had reached the middle of the shed. "My biggest concern was that she might fall off the other side, where there’s a 30-foot drop," he said.
The child’s parents rushed to the spot in tears, shouting for help. Shihabudheen remained calm. "There was no time to panic or be afraid. Since I am used to climbing buildings and elevated structures as part of my work, that experience served me well during this operation," he said.
