An All Party Meeting was held in Jammu to discuss the holding of Panchayat elections in the state. Talking to reporters after the meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti yesterday, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Abdul Haq Khan said, though all parties favoured holding of panchayat elections, the majority view was that the situation is not conducive for the elections at present.

Minister on December 25 last year, had announced the holding of Panchayat elections from 15th of this month after conveying her government's decision to state Governor N N Vohra. The Panchayat elections in the state were scheduled in 2016 but the government failed to hold till now.The last Panchayat elections were held in March-April 2011 after a gap of nearly four decades. The state has 4490 panchayats with 35096 panch constituencies.
