Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram stated on November 6 that the recent US midterm elections provided an important lesson for those aspiring for a “free and democratic country”. He asserted that liberalism, secularism and tolerance ultimately prevailed over divisive political rhetoric during the elections.
Chidambaram, a former Union Home Minister, remarked that the US elections took place amid a “cacophony” of issues including illegal immigration, perceived invasions by Asians and Latin Americans, and Islamophobic narratives. He
noted that these issues threatened to overshadow pressing concerns such as the cost of living, unemployment, fuel prices and law and order.
He posted on X, “The United States elections were held amidst the cacophony of Illegal immigration, invasion by Asians and Latin Americans, Islamophobic tropes, etc. They threatened to overwhelm bread-and-butter issues like cost of living, joblessness, fuel prices, law and order, etc. Eventually, liberalism, secularism and tolerance — and the basic democratic sense and spirit of America — triumphed.”
