In Bihar, the local court of Gopalganj has awarded the death penalty to nine men and life imprisonment to four women in connection with the 2016 hooch tragedy in which 19 people had died and two lost vision in the Khajurbanni locality of Gopalganj district.
 
Pronouncing this judgment the court of additional district



and session judge also imposed a fine of rupees 10 lakh on each of them. One of the accused had died in the course of the trial. The hooch tragedy occurred on the 16th of August 2016, just a few months after Prohibition was enforced in Bihar on the 6th of April 2016. This is the first case of the death penalty in a hooch tragedy case in Bihar.
