The festival of harvest, Baisakhi is being celebrated in northern part of the country today. On this occasion, farmers, especially in Punjab and Haryana, express their gratitude for a good harvest and pray for prosperity in the coming year. Baisakhi has special significance amongst the Sikh, as they also celebrate the foundation of the Khalsa panth set up by Guru Gobind Singh. 
On the Baisakhi in 1919, thousands of people sacrificed their lives at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar as British troops fired on the unarmed and peaceful protesters. This incident is known as



Jalianwala massacre in the history of freedom movement. 
President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have greeted the people on the occasion of Baisakhi. In his message, Mr Mukherjee hoped that bounty of nature continues to shower its blessings on hard working farmers. 
In a message, Mr. Modi expressed hope that this day bring joy and prosperity in society. The Prime Minister also paid tribute to all martyrs who lost their lives in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Mr. Modi said, their sacrifice and courage can never be forgotten.
