The Andhra Pradesh government has shifted the Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) public holiday from May 27 to May 28 following representations from the Muslim community regarding moon sighting.
Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad issued orders through G.O. Rt. No. 1006 declaring Thursday, May 28, as a general holiday across the State on the occasion of Bakrid.
Earlier, the government had notified May 27 as the holiday for the festival. However, based on the lunar calendar and expected moon
sighting, Bakrid is likely to be observed on May 28.
The decision was taken after the chief executive officer of the State Waqf Board submitted a representation requesting revision of the holiday date in accordance with the festival observance.
The government clarified that all government offices would function normally on May 27. In a separate order, G.O. Rt. No. 1007, the government also shifted the Bakrid holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, from May 27 to May 28.
