Lucknow: Akhilesh Yadav was elected the legislative party leader of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh at a meeting of the party's MLAs on Saturday.

He will be the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. A formal announcement regarding the same will be made shortly.

Earlier, Samajwadi Party leader Lalji Verma had said that the party wanted Akhilesh Yadav to be the Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. He also welcomed Akhilesh Yadav's decision to resign from his membership of the Lok Sabha and retain his seat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Sabha Speaker Om Birla's office on Tuesday to resign from his membership of the House. Akhilesh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Azamgarh constituency in 2019.

He defeated the BJP's SP Singh Baghel in Karhal during the recently held Uttar Pradesh Assembly election by more than 60,000 votes to become the MLA from the constituency.

In the Uttar Pradesh election of 2022, the BJP won 255 seats while the Samajwadi Party won 111. Hence, the BJP won a majority and has retained power in the state while the Samajwadi Party is the second-largest party in the state.
