Sunetra Pawar, wife of late Nationalist Congress Party (AP) chief Ajit Pawar, took oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra at a ceremony held at the Lok Bhavan in Mumbai on Saturday. She became the first woman to hold the post, previously held by Ajit Pawar, who tragically died in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday.
Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
During the oath-taking ceremony, loud and zealous chants of "Ajit Dada Amar Rahe (long live
Ajit Pawar)" filled the hall as hundreds of party workers and other office-bearers remembered their late leader.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to congratulate Sunetra Pawar and wished her well for her new role as Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister.
"Best wishes to Sunetra Pawar Ji as she begins her tenure as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the first woman to hold this responsibility. I am confident she will work tirelessly for the welfare of the people of the state and fulfil the vision of the late Ajitdada Pawar," he wrote.
