Lucknow: Senior Supreme Court advocate Zafaryab Jilani, who was the lawyer for the Muslim side in Ayodhya’s Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Masjid dispute, died here in Lucknow on Wednesday. He was 74.
Jilani had been ailing for some time now and breathed his last at a hospital in Nishatganj.

He has been a member of the Muslim Personal Law Board. Apart from this, he has also held the post of Chairman of Babri Masjid Action Committee and Additional Advocate General of UP.

Muslim clerics and scholars have expressed grief at his demise.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi mourned the death of Zafaryab Jilani,74, secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and senior advocate in the Supreme Court, in Lucknow on Wednesday.

"He was loved by all those who stand for justice," said Owaisi. Jilani died in a Lucknow hospital.

Jilani was widely known for representing Muslim petitioners in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. He also served as additional advocate general of Uttar Pradesh.
