After 78 years of independence, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is set to move out of the historic South Block and shift to the newly built Executive Enclave under the Central Vista Project. The transition is scheduled to take place next month, with the new PMO located closer to the Prime Minister’s residence.
The government has announced that the old North Block and South Block buildings will be converted into the ‘Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya’. An agreement has been signed between the National Museum and France Museum Development to facilitate the project. The museum will highlight India’s cultural heritage, offering glimpses of the nation’s past, present, and aspirations for the future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating new administrative buildings recently, pointed out that the country’s governance system had been operating from colonial-era
structures for decades, despite severe shortages of space, natural light, and ventilation. He remarked that several key ministries have functioned under such constraints for many years.
According to sources, the new PMO may also be given a fresh name, one that reflects the “spirit of service.” After assuming office for the third consecutive term, the Prime Minister reiterated, “PMO should be the PMO of the people, it is not Modi’s PMO.”
The New Executive Enclave will not only house the PMO but also the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, and a modern Conference Hall, equipped with facilities that were missing in the old buildings.
The government has emphasised that this move represents a step towards modernising the administrative set-up while also creating a space that connects with India’s cultural and historical identity.
