A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Friday night (September 5). This follows a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, September 4.
“EQ of M: 5.0, On: 05/09/2025 22:55:53 IST, Lat: 34.45 N, Long: 70.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the National Centre for Seismology said on X. However, there are no reports of injuries or casualties.
The previous 6.2-magnitude earthquake, recorded at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) at 34.57N latitude and 70.75E longitude, flattened villages in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, killing over 2,200, injuring more than 3,600, and leaving tens of thousands
homeless.
Survivors remain without shelter as aid organisations warn of shrinking resources, with the United Nations and other agencies highlighting an urgent need for food, medical supplies, and housing.
The first earthquake of magnitude 6, which is Afghanistan’s deadliest in recent years, struck Kunar and Nangarhar provinces on Sunday at a shallow depth of 10 km (six miles), causing widespread destruction.
A second 5.5-magnitude quake on Tuesday sparked panic, hampering rescue operations as landslides blocked roads to remote villages.
Authorities reported over 6,700 homes destroyed, while the United Nations warned the death toll could rise as survivors remain trapped under rubble.
