4 kids among 12 killed in last 24 hours, over 54 lakh people affected in Assam floods

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Wednesday as 12 more people, including four children, were killed in the last 24 hours. With these deaths, the toll in this year's flood and landslides rose to 100.

While four deaths were reported from Hojai district, two people lost their lives in Kamrup, and three each were killed in Barpeta and Nalbari. Over 54.7 lakh people have been affected in 4,941 villages across 32 districts.

A total of 845 relief camps and 1025 relief distribution centres have been set up by the district administrations in the affected districts where over 2.71 lakh people are taking shelter.

Fire and emergency services personnel swung into action as the flood situation worsened in Chirang district on Wednesday.

Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts continue to reel under flood waters.

 

Over 99,026 hectares of crop area have been



damaged in the current wave of floods this year. The water level in Kopili, Disang and Brahmaputra rivers is flowing above the danger level at several places.

Besides the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Fire and Emergency Services of the Assam police have been engaged in the relief and rescue operations.

The Army continued its relief and rescue operations on Wednesday in the districts of Darrang, Barpeta and Kamrup. As many as seven composite columns of the Army have been working round the clock to reach out to the flood victims to provide relief and medicines in the remotest flood affected areas.
