A surprise search at the Mangaluru District Prison has led to the seizure of 10 mobile phones allegedly being used by inmates.
The action followed credible information that prisoners lodged in the prison under judicial custody were using mobile phones.
Based on the information, Barke police registered a case on Monday night under Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act.
City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that police conducted a surprise raid at the prison. During the search, 10 smartphones were recovered from the
undertrials lodged in A-Block.
Mobile phones were recovered from Rifath Ali, Ibrahim Khalil, Ashfaq alias Juttu Ashfaq, Arshad, Dawood Parvez, Nazrath Ali, Shifan, Abdul Sadiq and Arfaz.
The first four are accused in the recent murder of Arif near Thokkottu, while Dawood Parvez, Nazrath Ali, Shifan and Abdul Sadiq are accused in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in connection with drug peddling.
Arfaz is an accused in a COCA case registered at Kankanady Town Police Station. Police are now investigating how the mobile phones were brought into the prison.
