US House of Representatives votes for commission to probe Capitol riot

In the United States, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives has voted for a commission to investigate the Capitol riot incident.

Notably, thirty-five Republicans defied their party leaders and former President Donald Trump while siding with Democrats to establish an inquiry.

Trump had earlier urged Republicans to vote against the Democrat's trap.

However, the bill looks unlikely to pass the upper house where Democrats would need 10 Republicans to join them in passing it.

The inquiry would establish a 10-member body, evenly split between the two main parties, that would make recommendations by the end of the year on how to prevent any repeat of a



similar incident.

Trump supporters had stormed the Capitol on 6th of January in an unsuccessful bid to thwart certification of President Joe Biden's victory.

Top Republican leader and New York Congressman John Katko who negotiated the legislation with Democrats said that the bill and the investigation are about facts and not partisan politics.

Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene said that the commission was a Democratic ruse to smear Trump supporters. 

Deputy Republican leader in the Upper Chamber John Thune said, he was concerned the inquiry would be weaponized politically during the 2022 Presidential election.
