In the United States, a federal appeals court has reinstated President Donald Trump’s tariffs, just a day after a trade court ordered an immediate halt to them. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington has said that it is pausing the lower court’s ruling to consider the government’s appeal, and ordered the plaintiffs to respond by June 5 and the administration by June 9.

Earlier on Wednesday, a

surprise decision by the U.S. Court of International Trade had blocked Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs on most U.S. trading partners. A three-judge panel from the trade court ruled that Trump had overstepped his authority by invoking the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to declare a national emergency and impose sweeping tariffs on imports from nearly every country worldwide.
