The trip back home after spending 30 years in the UAE turned out to be the last journey for an Indian expatriate.

Rajan Pillai from the south Indian state of Kerala died in a car accident when he was returning home from the Trivandrum International Airport on Sunday, a colleague of the deceased told Khaleej Times.

Pillai used to work at the Sharjah Police department.

He met with the tragic end a few kilometres away from his home in the Kollam district in Kerala within hours after

he landed from Sharjah. The accident happened when the car he was travelling in collided with a tourist bus. Pillai's only son, Amal, who was at the airport to receive his father, sustained injuries and has been hospitalised.

Pillai is survived by his wife Vijayasree.

"We are still in a state of shock. It is hard to believe that he is no more," said the colleague, who did not want to named. He said he had met Pillai a week before he left the UAE for good. "He was happy and looking forward to beginning a new life."
