Two people lost their lives after a plane fighting the wildfires crashed on the island of Evia near Athens, Greece. The accident occurred in the town of Karystos on the island where a fire has been burning for several days. Local media reported the plane’s wing clipped a tree, with footage showing the small plane plummeting to the ground and exploding after dropping its cargo over the blaze.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have fled Rhodes and Corfu amid blazes ravaging the country.

Blaze in Rhodes prompted the biggest evacuation in

Greek history. 20,000 people had to leave homes and hotels over the weekend as the inferno that began a week ago spread, while over 2,000 holidaymakers left the island by plane yesterday.

Around 2,500 people have already been evacuated from Corfu, which has been enduring dozens of blazes.

Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, has been put on high alert because of an extreme risk of fire.

Greece is experiencing its worst July for wildfires on record.
