Fri 04 Nov 2016, 10:16:34
The Paris Agreement to combat climate change agreed last year officially entered into force today, putting pressure on nearly 200 countries to start executing plans to slash their greenhouse gas emissions. The pact seeks to keep a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change.
On 5 of last month, exactly a month ago, the threshold for entry into force of the Paris Agreement was achieved as 94 countries ratified it. Appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced

capacity building framework will be put in place to achieve the ambitious goals of the agreement. It will also support action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries, in line with their own national objectives. In 2018, Parties will take stock of the collective efforts in relation to progress towards the goal and to inform the preparation of Nationally determined contributions, NDCs.
Meanwhile, delegates from around the world will gather in Morocco to begin this year's UN climate conference on Monday. They will discuss concrete rules to ensure emission cuts, including ways to verify whether nations have met their goals.
