Myanmar permanent representative to UN condemns military government

In a major embarrassment to the military government of Myanmar, its permanent representative to the UN on Friday denounced the military coup during an informal briefing by the special envoy of the Secretary General to the UN General Assembly. 

Permanent Representative of Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Moe also gave the three finger salute during his speech. The three finger salute has become the trademark symbol of the protestors in Myanmar since the military takeover of the government in the country.

Addressing the meeting, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe said that the landslide victory of the National League for Democracy (NLD) at the general elections manifests that the people of Myanmar are with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. Supporting the protestors in Myanmar, he said that he agreed with the view of the Secretary General that the military coup is not acceptable in the modern world. Urging strong support from the international community in the fight of Myanmar people against the military regime, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe called for the strongest action to immediately end the military coup and restore democracy.

Delivering his final words in Burmese Kyaw Moe Tun, a career diplomat, raised the three-finger salute of



pro-democracy protesters and announced  'our cause will prevail', reports Reuters.

He called upon the UN to condemn the military coup and not recognise the regime by any means. He further asked the UN member states not to cooperate with the military until the state power is returned to the people through the elected government. He urged that strongest possible measures be taken to stop the violent and brutal acts committed by the security forces against the peaceful demonstrators.

During the meeting, India reiterated its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar. India’s permanent representative to UN Ambassador T. S. Tirumurti said that the gains made by Myanmar on the path towards democracy should not get undermined. He said that rule of law and democratic process must be upheld and those detained be released. 

He further said that restoring democratic order should be the priority for all stakeholders in Myanmar.  He called upon the international community to lend its constructive support to Myanmar at this critical juncture. He commended Bangladesh for hosting a million displaced persons from the Rakhine state of Myanmar on its territory.
