Iranian university students are facing expulsions, disciplinary hearings and threats as authorities tighten their crackdown on dissent following nationwide anti-government protests and the outbreak of war involving the United States.
Dozens of students across the country have reportedly been summoned to disciplinary hearings for taking part in protests or expressing opposition to the government, according to student unions and human rights monitors.
The Associated Press spoke with six students facing disciplinary
action.
All requested anonymity, fearing retaliation from authorities.
The hearings involve university officials, representatives of Iran??`s supreme leader and campus security personnel. In one case, a social sciences student was questioned about his reaction to the killing of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in airstrikes on February 28.
Students could face expulsion or bans from studying at other universities. Some have also lost their jobs, received death threats or faced harassment after their identities were shared on pro-government social media accounts.
