In Indonesia, the death toll from a stampede at a soccer stadium in East Java province has been revised down to 125, in one of the world's worst stadium disasters.

East Java Deputy governor Emil Dardak today, October 3, said the data cross-checked from 10 hospitals in the area showed there were 125 fatalities. Earlier officials had put the figure as high as 174. However, the number of people injured now stood at 323, up from an earlier count of 180 according to East Java police spokesman Dirmanto.

Region's police chief Nico Afinta said tear gas was fired in an attempt to disperse agitated supporters of the losing home side who had invaded the pitch after the final whistle in Malang, East Java, on Saturday night. Hundreds were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC's loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium.

The crush took place after police

tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch. As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium's exits, where many suffocated.

Fifa, the world's governing football body, states that no crowd control gas should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.
The organisation's president Gianni Infantino said it was a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension.

The number of spectators exceeded the stadium's stated capacity of 38,000 by around 4,000 people.

Indonesian, Sports and Youth Minister, Zainudin Amali said he has asked for a full investigation into the tragedy to determine the parties responsible.

President Joko Widodo has ordered that all matches in Indonesia's top league must be stopped until the investigation is concluded.
