Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping called the party's 20th congress "a major event in the political life of the party and the country" at the New Year gathering organized by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a political advisory body.

President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission emphasized the importance of the Communist Party National Congress set for late 2022, when he is expected to take reins of the country for a third term without any plausible opposition.

As he has amended the constitution removing the requirement of two terms for Chinese President, experts say that President Xi is trying to rewrite the ‘rules of succession’ in Chinese political history as was done by Deng Xiaoping after Mao Zedong’s death. This included the selection of the ruling leader’s successor during his tenure, but this did not happen in 2017 when Xi became President for the second time. The president hailed 2021 as "a year of milestone significance" and noted that the Communist Party's third resolution on history was passed at a meeting in November at the sixth plenum.

The historical resolution, the likes of which only Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping have passed before him, praised Xi's achievements and attempted to elevate his stature in the party's history.
