A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Panama’s southern coast on Friday at a depth of 10 km, the US Geological Survey said, revising its initial estimate of the quake’s magnitude from 8.0.
There were no immediate reports of damage in Panama, although television footage showed people evacuating
buildings.
The tremors were felt in Panama City and the capital of neighbouring Costa Rica, according to Reuters witnesses.
The US Tsunami Warning System flagged potential tsunami threats along much of Central America’s Pacific coast, as well as in Colombia and Ecuador.
