A 48-year-old morbidly obese man from Vijayawada, who was experiencing a near-fatal cardiac emergency, was revived by doctors at Care Hospitals.

Panthangi Dhanunjayudu, weighing more than 100 kg, was admitted in a critical condition with severe breathlessness, low oxygen levels, a rapidly failing heart, and multiple comorbidities.

Dhanunjayudu, with diabetes-related kidney disease, was diagnosed with a massive pericardial effusion, a large collection of fluid around



the heart that was compressing the cardiac chambers and severely affecting blood circulation.

The cardiology and CT surgery specialists performed an emergency pericardial window procedure and removed 750 ml of fluid from around the heart, relieving pressure and restoring cardiac function.

The patient recovered steadily and was discharged home walking in stable condition, Dr V Surya Prakasa Rao, Clinical Director and Head of Cardiology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills.
