Two swept away in Gonepally stream of Chinna Kodur mandal in Siddipet Telangana

Heavy rains continued to lash Telangana State for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday that had most of the projects in both Krishna and Godavari basins filled to the brim following heavy inflows. The rains also resulted in tragedy for two persons who were swept away in Gonepally stream of Chinna Kodur mandal in Siddipet on Sunday.

Suresh and Zail Singh, natives of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh respectively, were on their way to visit their relatives in Siddipet. They were swept away when they ventured into a swollen Gonepally stream.

Meanwhile, Irrigation Department officials sounded an alert and cautioned people especially cattle and sheep rearers along with the fishermen not to venture near the banks of Godavari river downstream of Sriram Sagar project since 11 project gates were lifted to release over one lakh cusecs of water.

In a caution notice, Sriram Sagar Project Superintending Engineer G Srinivas said the project was expected to receive huge inflows from the projects upstream areas in Maharashtra because of heavy rainfall for the last few days. Cattle and sheep rearers and fishermen should not go near the downstream areas of the project on account of the release of water.

Following heavy rains, streams and water bodies overflowed in different parts of the State, which registered average rainfall of 18 mm against the 4 mm normal rainfall.

Very heavy rainfall of 115.64mm was recorded at Boinpally



in Rajanna Sircilla district and heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm was recorded at Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Peddapalli, Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medak and Nirmal districts.

With heavy rains lashing the State, various projects were getting steady inflows. During the last 24 hours, Jurala project received inflows of 19,206 cusecs and 23,349 cusecs was released downstream towards Srisailam. Subsequently, Srisailam project received 27,555 cusecs inflows and outflows were 53,199 cusecs.

Nagarjunasagar received inflows of 23,586 cusecs and the outflows were 21,517 cusecs. Singur project was nearing Full Reservoir Level as the project was receiving moderate inflows from upstream. The current storage in the project was 25.3 tmcft against its gross storage capacity of 29.91 tmcft.

Among the projects in Godavari basin, Sripada Yellampally received heavy inflows of 45,850 cusecs and the outflows were 44,885 cusecs.

More rains are expected in the next three days. According to Telangana State Development Planning Society, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lay over Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area was expected to form over Central Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.

This will result in light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places and heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places during the next three days.
