Hyderabad: Scheduled Castes Development Minister G. Jagadish Reddy on Friday said that the Telangana Government was supporting poor students to pursue higher education in foreign countries.

Replying to a question raised by MLC Dr. Palla Rajeshwar Reddy during Question Hour in State Legislative Council, the minister informed hundreds of students belonging to SC, ST, BC and minority communities have benefitted from the scheme so far.

Giving the statistics he said, for Scheduled Castes, Rs. 5.90 crore were spent on 77 students in 2014-15, Rs. 11.39 crore on 142 students and Rs. 23.80



crore was given to 128 students in 2016-17 under the overseas education scheme.

Similary, Rs. 22.79 crore were given in July/August 2015 to 226 students of minority community and another amount of Rs. 9.18 Crore was spent on 237 students in January/February 2016. As many as 132 applications of February 2017 from minority students are under process.

Similarly, 97 students of Scheduled Tribes benefited from the scheme during the last three years. He said 105 candidates of Backward Classes have been selected provisionally and the selection process is still going on.
