Nizamabad:: Protests against Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind for his failure to honor his electoral promise, took a violent turn on Saturday when BJP workers clashed with TRS activists and hurled stones on them leading to bleeding injuries to a Sub-Inspector Vamshi Krishna Reddy on duty in Dharpally mandal in the district.

A good number of TRS workers gathered in Dharpally after coming to know that Arvind was to come there to unveil a statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the land belonging to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC).

The BJP organized the statue unveiling event in connection with Shivaji Maharaj jayanthi. Since the RTC officials also objected to the statue’s installation, there were arguments and counter arguments between TRS and BJP supporters who also raised slogans against each other. The arguments led to jostling and stones were hurled resulting in injuries to SI Krishna Reddy.

The police officials rushed him to the government

hospital. Sensing that the situation might go out of control, the police resorted to lathicharge and dispersed the groups. Sources said that the police foiled the attempts of Arvind to take part in similar programmes at two other areas in the district in wake of stone pelting incident at Dharpally.

Nizamabad Police Commissioner KR Nagaraju said the situation was now under control in Dharpally. Additional police forces were also deployed to prevent any untoward incidents in the district. “We are identifying the people who constructed a platform for installing the statue without permission from the RTC,” he said.

He said a case was also booked against those who resorted to stone-pelting.

This was the second time that Arvind tasted the people’s ire in the district and had to cut short his visit when turmeric farmers obstructed his convoy and raised slogans demanding his resignation as he failed to get the Turmeric Board sanctioned to Nizamabad, as per his election promise.
