A tribal couple from Medak district allegedly sold their newborn son to a childless couple from Kamareddy district for Rs. 1.70 lakh. The incident came to light on Monday after a local Anganwadi worker noticed that the infant and the couple were missing.

The woman, a resident of Lingasanipally Thanda in Havelighanpur mandal, delivered a healthy baby boy on February 10 at the Mother and Child Care Centre in Medak.

According to reports, she sold the baby a week later to a childless couple from Kamareddy.

As the

woman had not been visiting the Anganwadi centre to collect eggs and food regularly, the Anganwadi worker visited her house and found it locked. When enquiries were made, neighbours informed that the couple had left for their relatives’ home.

However, villagers later found the couple in Chegunta without their baby on Monday and alerted ICDS supervisor Vijayalakshmi.

She visited Chegunta and accompanied them to the Havelighanpur police station, where the couple reportedly confessed to selling their baby. Further investigation is underway.
