Travellers demand MMTS extension to Shamshabad airport

As the State government plans to construct a Rs 345-crore flyover parallel to the Metro Rail line up to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, a fresh demand has emerged for extending the MMTS railway service up to Shamshabad as a cost-effective alternative.

The Travellers Association has urged the State government and GMR to release about 6 km of land to enable Indian Railways to lay an MMTS line to the airport. According to the association, the project can be completed within six months and would offer affordable fares ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 30 from different



parts of the city.

At present, air passengers largely depend on buses and private vehicles, leading to high travel and parking costs and increased road congestion. A dedicated MMTS link would provide a faster and reliable public transport option for passengers, airport staff and the general public, it said.

The association noted that railways are ready to take up the project once the required land is handed over and recalled that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier, as a parliamentarian, sought the land for airport rail connectivity.
