With traffic congestion worsening in the IT corridor due to heavy use of private and personal vehicles, the woes of the workforce commuting daily to these parts have increased amid traffic snarls and slowdowns. It is in this backdrop that the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is focusing on expanding public transport as the only viable solution.

Along with improving revenue, the corporation has drawn up a plan to introduce new Metro Deluxe buses in the IT corridor from this month. These buses will be offered to corporate and IT companies on a rental basis. RTC officials said the move would be especially helpful for employees working night shifts.

The RTC also plans to introduce 2,800 new electric buses in the capital region over the next two years. The initiative is aimed at making Hyderabad’s public transport system greener and more commuter-friendly.

Currently,

charging facilities are available at six depots and fast-charging stations will be set up at nine more depots. In addition, 10 new depots are planned across the Greater Hyderabad region, each equipped with electric charging infrastructure. Government land is being identified for these projects.

The Gowliguda bus stand will also be brought into active use with a dedicated charging station. With these measures, TGSRTC is looking to position Hyderabad as a model city for eco-friendly mass transport in the coming years.

*Total number of RTC buses operating in IT corridor – 450

* Electric buses – 200

*New EV buses to be introduced – 275

*The Occupancy Rate in buses in IT Corridor – 25 per cent

*Metro Rail users – 3 per cent to 4 per cent.

*Peak hours – 8 am – 11 am, 5 pm to 8 pm.
