In a move to enhance passenger experience and keep in tune with emerging digital habits, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is planning to roll out free WiFi services in its buses and bus stations.

This initiative is aimed to attract passengers, particularly youth who use internet during every available free time, including during commuting or waiting for transport. The digital expansion through WiFi is seen as part of RTC’s broader vision to offer modern and tech-friendly services to its passengers.

The proposal which is currently under discussion at the management level, seeks to replicate the free WiFi model already in place at many railway stations across India. The RTC currently offers free WiFi service only in Lahari AC buses operated to distant places and the plan is to extend this facility not only to other categories of buses but also to bus

stations.

“There have been ideas and proposals from various tech companies. But nothing has been finalised as of now. It may take some more time for implementing it,” said a TGSRTC official.

The onboard entertainment content like music and movies using WiFi, while being offered free to passengers, will include embedded commercial advertisements, offering a revenue-sharing opportunity for both TGSRTC and the service provider.

It is also yet to be known where exactly the free WiFi services should be deployed first. A decision is to be made on whether to introduce the facility in city ordinary buses, intercity services or limit it to major bus complexes and long-distance luxury AC buses. If implemented, this initiative not only promises to make traveling in public transport more enjoyable for passengers but also presents an additional revenue stream for the already financially strained RTC.
