Police lobbed tear gas shells and promulgated prohibitory orders at Utnoor town in Adilabad district on Sunday following a group clash over a derogatory message posted on WhatsApp by a local youth. The post was against a community .

Angered over the derogatory post members of the community staged a protest demanding that the police arrest the youth. This soon resulted in a group clash as members of another community , to which the youth belonged, supported him. Both groups pelted stones forcing the police to



resort to lathicharge. As things appeared to get out of hand, the police lobbed tear gas shells.

Several police personnel including senior officials were injured in the stone pelting incident. Police held a meeting with members of both the communities. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were promulgated in the town. Police pickets have been posted in sensitive areas. Senior officials are camping in the town to prevent fresh outbreak of violence.
