Mild tension prevailed in Nirmal on Sunday night when an unidentified person, under the influence of alcohol, pelted stones at a religious structure of another community when devotees were taking out a procession as part of the Sri Rama Navami festival. Additional Superintendent of Police K Dakshanamurthy sustained minor injuries on his head in pelting of stones by some youth.
Nirmal police said that window pane of the religious structure was
damaged when the accused, who was taking part in the procession, pelted stone at it. Following this, two groups gathered around 9 PM and started pelting stones, leading to tension.
Police, however, reached the spot and dispersed the two groups and brought the situation under control using tear gas and lathi-charge. In the melee, Dakshanamurthy suffered an injury when some miscreants pelted stones. Nirmal in-charge Superintendent of Police Vishnu S Warrier also rushed to the spot and ensured the situation was under control.
