Telangana Ministers, MLAs to camp in Delhi to seek Presidential nod for BC reservation Bill

The Telangana Cabinet has decided that the entire Cabinet, Congress MLAs, MLCs, MPs, and other elected representatives will camp in New Delhi from August 5 to 7 to seek President Droupadi Murmu‘s approval for the 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.

BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the State government will seek an appointment with the President to press for approval of the Bill passed by the Assembly.

During their three-day stay in the national capital, Telangana Congress leaders will also reach out to MPs from other parties and alliance partners to garner support for implementing the increased BC quota, he



added.

The High Court recently directed the State government to conduct local body elections before September 30. Currently, gram panchayats are not receiving Central funds due to the absence of elected bodies. Against this backdrop, the Cabinet held an extensive discussion on BC reservations, the Minister said.

Prabhakar urged all BC organizations and community leaders from various parties to join the movement in New Delhi. He also accused the BJP, which had supported the Bill in the Assembly, of creating hurdles in getting Presidential assent.

On staging a protest at Jantar Mantar, the Minister said, “All possible measures will be explored to implement BC reservations.”
