The Telangana High Court on Monday directed the Police Department to respond favourably to a plea seeking permission for a peace rally demanding the formation of Secunderabad Municipal Corporation. The court also ordered the department to submit a detailed report by February 5.
Hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Tukaram G of the 13th bench instructed the police to consult representatives of the Lashkar District Sadhana Samithi and, if required, frame suitable guidelines for conducting the rally.
The Samithi, represented by senior advocate Mukheed, had earlier applied for
permission to hold a rally from Secunderabad Railway Station to the Mahatma Gandhi statue on MG Road on January 17. However, the police had denied permission just hours before the event. A fresh application was submitted on January 21 to the City Police Commissioner and Malkajgiri DCP, but reportedly received no response.
Following this, Samithi president Gurram Pawan Kumar Goud moved the High Court seeking approval to hold the rally on February 7. The court’s latest direction effectively asked the police to reconsider the request in a constructive manner.
