In a relief to the Congress government in Telangana, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has approved the nomination of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin and retired professor M Kodandaram as MLCs under the Governor's quota, official sources said on Saturday.
The Governor's nod comes after a prolonged wait, as Azharuddin, who was sworn in as a minister on October 31 last year, is required to be elected to the legislature within six months, by April 30.
The issue figured in a meeting Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy
had with the Governor on April 19. Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud hailed the Governor's approval.
He said the presence of prominent persons in the legislative council would help in governance. Azharuddin was nominated as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor's quota by the Telangana government in August last year.
Meanwhile, Kodandaram, who played a key role in the Telangana agitation as chairman of Joint Action Committee of political parties, was nominated as MLC in 2024.
