The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, issued a red alert on Monday evening, warning of a severe heatwave as maximum temperatures are expected to soar past 44 degrees Celsius in several districts of Telangana on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In its five-day temperature forecast, the IMD, Hyderabad, has specifically issued a red alert for Adilabad, Jagityal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Rajanna Sircilla districts.

The red alert from the weather department signifies a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke across all age groups. The red alert also advises that extreme care has to be taken of vulnerable people, which include daily labourers, gig workers, the elderly, individuals with co-morbid conditions and children.

The IMD, Hyderabad, has also indicated that multiple districts in Telangana will witness thunderstorms,



lightning and gusty winds between Wednesday, April 29, and Friday, May 1.

A specific warning of intense thunderstorm activity has been issued for Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Hyderabad, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jogulamba Gadwal, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Medak, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mulugu, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Narayanpet, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Wanaparthy, Warangal and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

Meanwhile, several districts in the north and eastern parts of Telangana continue to bear the brunt of severe heatwave. Adilabad recorded the state’s highest temperature on Sunday at a scorching 44.5 degrees Celsius, followed closely by several districts including Nizamabad (44.3), Nirmal (44.3), Nalgonda (44.3), Bhadradri Kothagudem (44.2), Kumuram Bheem (44.2), Jagtial (44.1) and Kamareddy (44.0).
