Telangana Assembly declares Khairatabad seat vacant following Danam Nagender disqualification

Following the Telangana High Court judgment disqualifying Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, the Legislative Assembly has issued a gazette notification stating that the seat stood vacant with effect from April 23, 2024.

On September 18, the High Court disqualified Danam Nagender for contesting the Secunderabad Lok Sabha election as a Congress candidate while continuing as a BRS MLA. The court held that his disqualification would take effect from April 23, 2024, the day he filed his nomination as a Congress candidate. It also shared copies of its order with the Election Commission of India and



the Telangana Assembly.

Challenging the High Court judgment, Danam Nagender approached the Supreme Court. However, on September 24, the apex court upheld the High Court judgment.

Accordingly, Assembly Secretary Rendla Thirupathi issued a gazette notification on September 26 stating that, in pursuance of the High Court judgment, Danam Nagender, who was elected from the Khairatabad constituency, stood disqualified with effect from April 23, 2024. The notification effectively records the vacancy of the Khairatabad Assembly seat from the date of Nagender’s disqualification.
