Chairman of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (CoRS), Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre appreciated the road safety measures being taken up by Telangana government, especially on Outer Ring Road and other State roads.

He directed the authorities to further strengthen the enforcement and other measures to curb accidents and incidents. He wanted the officials to strive for ensuring no road fatalities in Telangana.

In the recent audit conducted by the CoRS in association with consultants, it was reported that road safety situation in Telangana needed some improvement, he said.

The Chairman, CoRS, further said in Telangana 91 per cent of road-related fatalities were due to over-speeding. “If fastening seat belts and wearing helmets is ensured and over-speeding is controlled, road related fatalities will be reduced drastically,” said Justice Abhay Manohar

Sapre.

He visited Hyderabad on Saturday and reviewed the road safety interventions taken up by the State government.

During the meeting, detailed power point presentations were made on the safety measures taken by Telangana government regarding rectification of black spots, steps taken on Outer Ring Road and in GHMC area to control accidents and setting up of trauma care centers.

The CoRS Chairman expressed concern that 6,690 people had died in Telangana in road accidents this year. Though accidents were more in countries like China, Japan and Germany, fatalities were very less. In India, nearly 1.5 lakh people were losing lives in accidents, he pointed out.

Transport Commissioner MRM Rao, Additional DGP Jitender, Additional DGP (Railways and Road Safety) Sandeep Shandilya, R&B Engineer-in-Chief P Ravinder Rao and others attended the meeting.
