In a rare and complex surgery, the surgeons at the State-run Gandhi Hospital have successfully removed an enlarged spleen weighing 2.8 kilograms and 45 cm in length, from a 43-year-old woman, a resident of Warasiguda.
The woman was suffering from massive splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) and pancytopenia, which led to severe reduction in red cells, white cells, and
platelets.
The patient approached Gandhi Hospital after suffering from abdominal pain for three months and abdominal swelling for one month. Upon examination, doctors discovered that her spleen had grown significantly, extending below the navel.
Tests confirmed pancytopenia, a condition where all three major blood cell components drop to dangerously low levels, making any surgical intervention extremely risky.
