City Traffic Police, vexed with the delay in payments of fines and as part of efforts to make things easier for public, is introducing card payments for traffic violations.

Rise in the number of people getting their own wheels to travel has seen a simultaneous and obvious rise in the number of violators too. Delays too have gone up, which is why the department is looking at new ways to ensure payment of challans, an official reasoned, adding that a system to accept debit or credit card payments would be in vogue very soon.

“The department had earlier introduced an e-challan system, giving three choices for citizens to pay their fine amounts. Moving ahead, we are now planning to make plastic money an

acceptable way of payment,” said AV Ranganath, DCP, Traffic-1.

The new facility will be introduced in collaboration with IndusInd Bank, for which discussions have been held already.“Efforts are being made to map what exactly the pros and cons will be, once card payment comes into existence. We have identified a few difficulties for which remedies are being worked out,” he said.

The initial idea is to make card swipe machines available in select traffic police stations in the city. There are 25 traffic police stations in the city and the move will be to launch the facility in stations where transactions could be high, before extending it to all stations in a phased manner, the officer added.
