Patients and healthcare staff at the Osmania General Hospital faced a hard time on Wednesday morning when several blocks in the hospital were flooded with water due to the heavy rains.

Towards noon, teams of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Works and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) reached the spot and cleared the water.

There was knee-deep water in front of the old building of the hospital in the morning. The hospital staff tried to clear the water by lifting the manhole covers which however did not help. “Healthcare staff including doctors were forced to wade through the knee-deep water. The situation persisted for almost three hours,” a staff nurse said.

With

complaints being lodged, teams of the GHMC monsoon emergency squad reached the spot and cleared the choked drain to facilitate exit of water.

“We informed the GHMC and HMWS&SB, following which senior officers of both agencies reached here and supervised the work,” said Mohd Rafi, RMO, Osmania General Hospital. He said rainwater accumulated as the drains were clogged at a few points and the main rainwater discharge lines got blocked outside the hospital. “The blocked point is being cleared,” he said.

Officials said old clothes and plastic bags and covers dumped in the washrooms had found their way into the drainage system, blocking it and causing the flooding of the area.
