A case of suspected medical negligence has sparked outrage in Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana on Thursday, after a pair of surgical scissors was found in the ashes of a woman who died during childbirth.

The incident came to light when Chatla Vanaja (21) of Shambhunigudem village, Gundala mandal in the district, who was pregnant, went into labour on June 13 and was taken to the Gundala Primary Health Centre (PHC) by her family.

With no doctors available at night, a PHC staff nurse reportedly conducted the delivery, and she gave birth to a baby girl. The

newborn was said to be in critical condition, and Vanaja suffered severe bleeding during childbirth.

Both the mother and child were shifted to the Government Hospital in Yellandu. Doctors there declared the baby dead on arrival. Noting Vanaja’s deteriorating condition, they advised the family to take her to Khammam town for better treatment. Unfortunately, Vanaja died while they were on the way to Khammam.

According to reports, government officials are conducting a full-fledged enquiry into the matter and have placed the Gundala Medical Officer under suspension.
