Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K.T. Rama Rao on Thursday said the Rs.5 meal centres being operated in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will now be called as “Annapurna” centres.

At present, 109 such centres are being operated in GHMC limits and everyday about 22,000 persons relish quality and hygienic food at these centres, he said. Each meal costs Rs.24.25, of which, GHMC bears Rs.19.25 and the rest is paid by the consumer. The idea behind launching the programme was to offer quality and hygienic food to people, especially low income groups, daily labourers, said Rao.

The quality and taste of food was even liked by Opposition Leader K Jana Reddy, the Minister said,

responding to a question by TRS MLA M. Krishna Rao in the Legislative Assembly here.

“I appeal to the Government to fix a photograph of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at all the centres, since he ordered the setting up of these meal centres for feeding the poor,” TRS MLA Krishna Rao said, adding that water sachets which are being supplied at Rs 2 should be provided free of cost to the customers.

Qutbullapur MLA K.P. Vivekanand appealed to the Minister to ensure permanent stalls for the centres, besides sanitation and handwash basins at the centres.

Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) MLA G. Sayyanna urged the government to establish Rs.5 meal centres in Cantonment limits as well.
