Rachakonda police have been trying different methods to educate people about following traffic rules. During this year’s road safety week, held between February 4 and 10, the Rachakonda police distributed around 300 free helmets to people found riding on highways without helmet.

Vinod Kumar Kanumala, founder of Indian Federation of Road Safety, said: “Maximum number of accident victims are two-wheeler riders, and most deaths occur because of head injuries. Most people fail to understand the importance of wearing a helmet, and the rest wear it just to avoid being penalised by the police.”

In 2018, the Rachakonda police recorded 8,36,985 cases of helmet violation, while 23,238 cases were recorded for driving without seat belt.

Divyacharan Rao, DCP traffic, Rachakonda, said, “The maximum number of violations are regarding non-compliance of helmet rule, followed by over-speeding, and seat belt violations. These are basic rules for safety.

We have carried out drives during this year’s road safety week by distributing 300 free helmets. Apart from that, we have also offered flowers and garlanded commuters who were found violating traffic rules.” This year, traffic police plan to intensify the enforcement.

According to safety experts, bikers jumping signals is rampant phenomenon in the city. In most cases, traffic cops manning junctions fail to take immediate action. “Imposing challan is fine, but taking immediate action will make a difference,” said Vinod. “At some road junctions, there are signboard of ‘free left’, but many vehicles, supposed to move straight on the main road, block the lane on the left, which leads to heavy traffic congestion,” said Vinod.

Most of the times, traffic police don’t stop vehicles which jump signals, but later issue a challan. If they stop them immediately, people will think twice before flouting rules
