Plans are being chalked out for new transplantation units at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) where transplantation of liver, kidney, pancreas and other of other organs can be taken up. At present, such procedures are conducted at Operation Theatres in the hospital. However, the liver and kidney transplantation units are located in two buildings which are a few feet away from each other on the OGH premises.
Doctors said that since 90 per cent of infrastructure is the same for any transplantation procedure, having all units at one place would be of immense help. Health Minister C Laxma Reddy on Sunday said towers would be built for liver and kidney transplantations. According to plans that are underway, the Hyderabad District Area Hospital at King Koti was also considered.
Institutes in other states which are exclusively dedicated to

transplantations are being studied to work out the plans. Once built, apart from the procedure, tumours related to the organs and other diseases would also be treated.“Right now, the facilities are spread everywhere. The liver transplantation unit is in In-Patient Block and the kidney transplantation unit is in Quli Qutb Shah Block, which are located away from each other in the same premises.Around 90 per cent of the equipment is the same for any transplantation.
If the units are located in one building, it would help. Besides, the Operation Theatres (OT) in which we conduct the surgeries are state-of -the-art. But one of the OGH buildings is decades old,” said a doctor from the hospital, adding that new premises are required.  Many complex liver, kidney, pancreas transplantations have been taken up by doctors at the government hospital.
