Onion Prices Soar to Rs.80 Per Kg in Telangana

Onion prices have been rising steadily across Telangana, with retail prices increasing from around Rs.40 per kg to Rs.60 and now touching Rs.80 per kg in several markets. 

A few days ago, onions were being sold at around Rs.60 per kg, but prices have since climbed further, putting pressure on household budgets. 

Nashik in Maharashtra is one of the major onion-producing centres and is a key source of supply for Telangana. Onions from Maharashtra are



transported to markets in Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Sircilla and other parts of the State. Telangana also receives onions from Karnataka and the Kurnool region of Andhra Pradesh.

Traders attributed the sharp increase to a shortage in supply caused by delays in the arrival of the new crop and adverse weather conditions in major onion-growing regions. Earlier, consumers could purchase nearly 3 kg of onions for Rs.100, but the quantity has now dropped sharply due to the rise in prices.
