The State Civil Supplies Department, which launched special drives to weed out duplicate and bogus ration cards has cancelled nearly 1 lakh cards that were in the name of non-intended beneficaries including those of 10,000 government officials and staff.
The stamping out process which was initially taken up under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits is soon expected to be carried out throughout the State.
The initiative has the Civil Supplies officials carrying out door-to-door scrutiny and collecting thorough details of those in possession of cards and narrowing down on the actual beneficaries, to whom benefits can be extended under public distribution system.

the exercise as one taken up with proper checks and balances to ensure that genuine benefciaries did not suffer. “So far over 1 lakh bogus cards have been cancelled in the city and in the process, the department has saved nearly Rs 5 crore,” an official said.
The department has decided to carry out the initiative till the end of this financial year as it would help the government plan better in earmarking funds in the budget and ensure that only genuine families are benefitted.It was also said that several government staff and others from the above poverty line continued to hold ration cards. “Several of them do not avail the benefits, but retain the card as an identity proof,” said the official.
