The project, which is aimed at keeping the traffic through the IT corridor flowing smoothly, has the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) constructing a four-lane bi-directional flyover from Shilpa Layout to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Gachibowli Junction.

The 823 metre-long, 16.60 metre-wide flyover is being built under the State government’s Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP). Apart from easing traffic at the busy Gachibowli Junction, the project will improve the connectivity between Hitec City and Financial District. Traffic conditions will also improve on the ORR-Madhapur stretch, Kondapur and help the traffic heading towards Meenakshi Group Buildings as well.

The project, which began in December 2019, is expected to be completed by June 2022. As of date, foundation pits have been dug and pillars have been laid. GHMC officials said the work was underway at a brisk pace. “We will be able to meet the deadline. These projects are designed keeping in mind the needs of future generations,” an engineer monitoring the

flyover works said.

On the Shilpa Layout road, the projected peak hour traffic in 2020 was 1,464 passenger car units (PCU) per hour and the projected peak hour traffic in 2040 was 5,194 PCU per hour. At the Gachibowli Junction, the peak hour traffic in 2019 was 9,806 PCU per hour and the projected peak hour traffic in 2036 will go up to 17,711 PCU per hour.

M Venkata Rao Infra Projects has been handed over the contract of building the flyover and the agency will also build the central median and crash barriers. The State government, apart from building the Shilpa Layout flyover also proposed a six-lane bi-directional flyover to link Kondapur and ORR at the second level crossing of Gachibowli Junction.

The estimated contract value of both the projects is Rs 313.52 crore. In the IT corridor, to ensure hassle-free commuting, a series of flyovers and underpasses have been built under SRDP and link roads have also been developed by the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited.
